Long gaps between meals can boost health, longevity: Study

Do you eat food more often? According to a study, longer daily fasting times or increasing the duration between meals, regardless of calorie intake as well as diet composition, can make men more healthy and help them live longer, compared to those who eat more frequently, researchers say. In the study, meal-fed and calorie-restricted male mice showed improvements in overall health -- common age-related damage to the liver and other organs -- and an extended longevity. The calorie-restricted mice also showed significant improvement in fasting glucose and insulin levels. "Increasing daily fasting times, without a reduction of calories and regardless of the type of diet consumed, resulted in overall improvements in health and survival in male mice," said lead author Rafael de Cabo, from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). Struggling to cut down your body fat? Eating breakfast late, but having an early dinner may help, suggests a pilot study. Lifestyle-Fashion News : Struggling to cut down your body fat? Eating breakfast late, but having an early dinner may help, suggests a pilot study. The findings showed that people who delayed their breakfast by 90 minutes and had their dinner 90 minutes earlier than usual lost more than twice as much body fat on average. Further, those who changed their meal times ate less food overall, than those who did not, the researchers said. "Although this study is small, it has provided us with invaluable insight into how slight alterations to our meal times can have benefits to our bodies," said Jonathan Johnston, from the UK's University of Surrey. "Reduction in body fat lessens our chances of developing obesity and related diseases, so is vital in improving our overall health," he added.

The findings may explain why the loss of the ability to smell has been recognised as an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease Lifestyle News : Do you know why you instantly recall the smell of apple pie prepared way back by your grandmother as you walk into her kitchen? There is a scientific reason behind it. Researchers have now discovered the mechanism behind how smells that one has experienced in the past have contributed in the formation of memories -- suggesting a novel perspective on the way senses are represented in memory. The findings may explain why the loss of the ability to smell has been recognized as an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease and can offer opportunities for improved smell tests in Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. "Our findings demonstrate for the first time how smells we've encountered in our lives are recreated in memory," said lead author Afif Aqrabawi from the University of Toronto. "In other words, we
