Mumbai Police files case against captain of Barge P305 for 'negligence'

  The Mumbai Police on Friday registered an FIR against the captain of barge P305, which sank on Monday in the Arabian Sea, 35 nautical miles from Mumbai under the impact of the Cyclone Tauktae . The barge captain Rakesh Ballav, along with others, has been booked on the basis of a complaint by rescued barge engineer Mustafizur Rehman Shaikh. According to the police, the case has been registered in Mumbai's Yellow Gate police station. "A case has been registered against Barge P305 Captain Rakesh Ballav and others on the complaint of a barge engineer. The case has been registered under section 304(2), 338 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)," the police said. Police also said it has launched a search for the Captain. Navy says 89 missing from barge, all on other vessels safe after cyclone

  The Navy on Wednesday said its personnel, battling extreme weather, have so far rescued 184 of the 273 people onboard barge P305, adding all personnel on board two other barges and an oil rig are safe after Cyclone Tauktae fury rendered these vessels adrift. "As of Wednesday morning, 184 personnel of barge P305 have been rescued and INS Kochi and INS Kolkata are returning to Mumbai harbour with the rescuees. "INS Teg, INS Betwa, INS Beas, P8I aircraft and Seaking helicopters are continuing with the search and rescue operations," a Navy spokesperson said. All the 137 personnel on barge GAL Constructor were rescued on Tuesday by the Navy and Coast Guard. The 196 personnel on barge SS-3 and 101 personnel on board oil rig Sagar Bhushan are safe, the official said. Read More

Prime Minister also launched e-book of maritime vision 2030, which is aiming to make the Indian maritime insutry at par with the top global benchmark in the next 10 years. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State (MoS) Ports, Shipping and Waterways (Independent Charge) in his opening remark said that the summit is one of the biggest virtual summit in the world with the participation of 1.7 lakhs partipants from more than 100 nations. "In the three day summit, we will have ministers from eight nations, over 50 global CEOs and more than 160 speakers which include 115 international speakers from 24 nations," he said. Indian Navy's MiG-29K trainer crashes over Arabian Sea; one pilot missing

  A MiG-29K fighter trainer jet of the Indian Navy met with an accident at sea on Thursday evening after which one of the two pilots has been missing while the other one has been recovered. Search is in progress to locate the pilot, who went missing after the accident, the Indian Navy said, while adding that an inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident. "A MiG-29K trainer aircraft operating at sea met with an accident at about 1700 hrs on 26 November. One pilot has been recovered and search by air and surface units in progress for the second pilot. An inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident," the Indian Navy said. The Indian Navy has a fleet of over 40 MiG-29K fighter aircraft based out of Goa and also operated from the INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier. Read More

Navy plans to build 24 submarines, 6 of them nuclear powered: Report

To strengthen its underwater fleet, the Indian Navy plans to build 24 submarines, including six nuclear attack submarines, a parliamentary panel was told. The Navy also told the panel that Medium Refit Life Certification (MRLC) of submarine Sindhuraj has been held up since the Russian side has not been able to submit bank guarantees and integrity pact due to sanctions imposed by the US. In its report tabled this month, the Navy stated that there are presently 15 conventional submarines and two nuclear submarines in its fleet. The Indian Navy has two nuclear submarines INS Arihant and INS Chakra, with the latter being leased from Russia. Majority of the conventional submarines are over 25 years old. Indian Navy launches Scorpene class submarine Vela: All you need to know

Scorpene class submarine Vela , equipped with modern machinery and technology to guard the seas, was launched here on Monday, an official said. It will undergo a number of tests by the Indian Navy before it gets commissioned in the defence fleet, the official added. It is the fourth submarine to be launched by the state-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) after entering into a contract for the construction and transfer of technology for six Scorpene class submarines with French collaborator Ms Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS). "Today, we are bringing the new Vela with modern machinery and technology to guard the seas," an official from MDL said. INS Vela was first commissioned on August 31, 1973 in the Indian Naval service and continued to serve for 37 years. IAF has 13% of women officers, highest among all three forces: MoS Defence

The Air Force has 13.09 per cent of women officers, the highest among all three forces, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre said Wednesday. The Army has 3.80 per cent of women officers , while the Navy has six per cent of women officers, he said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The Air Force has 13.09 per cent of women officers in its force. Women are recruited in the Army, Navy and the Air Force only in the officer's rank. In response to a question, on import of missiles from Russia that could attract US sanctions, the Minister said the government was aware of all developments that may impact the procurement of defence equipments. Looking to induct 56 ships, subs; 3rd aircraft carrier in works: Navy Chief

The Indian Navy is looking at inducting 56 warships and submarines and the process for bringing in a third aircraft carrier has been moved, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba said on Monday, vowing to enhance the force's maritime capability.  He also assured the country that the Navy is keeping round-the-clock vigil on India's maritime domain. "Navy is looking at inducting 56 warships and submarines to enhance its strength. This is apart from 32 warships under construction," he said at his annual press conference. The process for installing automated identification transponders on around 250,000 fishing boats has been started as part of efforts to enhance coastal security, Admiral Lanba said. The process for induction of a third aircraft carrier has been moved, he said. The company is a finalist in a separate competition to supply the Indian navy with 57 fighter jets. “We have gotten to know Indian industry, understand the Indian process,” Cunningham said.
