Image
In Match 61 of Pro Kabaddi 2019 , UP Yoddha will lock horns with Puneri Paltan at Thayagraj Sports Complex in New Delhi on Monday. It will be a battle between two defence heavy teams. UP Yoddha defence averages 9.7 tackle points per match and have a tackle strike rate of 43 which is 2nd lowest in Pro Kabaddi 2019. But one of the best finds for UP Yoddha is the Left Corner Sumit. Like Nitesh Kumar last season, Sumit might be the star for UP Yoddha in the defence for PKL 2019. On the other hand, Puneri Paltan have Surjeet Singh and Girish Ernak in their ranks, who have proved their defensive techniques in past. Surjeet Singh the initiator in Pune defence Captain Surjeet Singh in the past few matches have led from the front in the defensive setup and has been the initiator for the team. Surjeet Singh has scored 26 tackle points in Pro Kabaddi 2019 out of which 18 tackle points are scored in the last four matches. He has scored at an average of 4.5 tackle points per match. He also...

Pro Kabaddi 2019, Match 21 preview: Can Siddharth Desai make a mark today?

Image
In Match 21 of Pro Kabaddi 2019 , Telugu Titans will take on UP Yoddha at Sardar Vallabbhai Indoor Stadium in Mumbai. In their previous match, Yoddha came back from a two-match slump as acting captain Rishank Devadiga controlled his team brilliantly. On the other hand, the Titans have failed to make any impression so far in PKL 2019 despite having the likes of the Desai brothers – Siddharth and Suraj. The Telugu Titans defence had a very bad start in Pro Kabaddi 2019. The Titans have managed to score an average of eight tackle points per match in PKL 7 so far. In the last season, after four matches, the Telugu Titans had scored an average of 14.3 tackle points. One of the main reasons for the poor start to this season has been that the team’s star defenders, captain Abozar Mighani and Vishal Bhardwaj, have not been clicking. No other defender in Pro Kabaddi history has tackled Siddharth Desai as much as Nitesh Kumar (five successful tackles). With Siddharth Desai out of sorts at...

On Day 6 of VIVO Pro Kabaddi League , PKL 2019 , UP Yoddha take on Gujarat Fortunegiants in match 10 at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday. Fortunegiants will play their second match of Pro Kabaddi 2019 and look to continue with their domination. Meanwhile, UP Yoddha had a dismal start to their PKL 2019 season after they failed to grab crucial raid points. In PKL 6, UP Yoddha had the raiding trio of Prashanth Kumar Rai, Rishank Devadiga and Shrikant Jadhav. In PKL 7 they have replaced Prashanth with Monu Goyat. Last year’s star defender Nitesh failed to impress in UP Yoddha’s first outing and looks set to bring the spark back into his team’s defensive unit. Due to his phenomenal showing in PKL 6, Nitesh Kumar has been handed the captaincy for PKL 7, taking over from Rishank Devadiga. Nitesh Kumar was the best defender of PKL 6 as he scored 100 tackle points for the season and is the only player to do so in PKL history. Nitesh Kumar also had an amazing tackle po...

Pro Kabaddi League: A televised spectacle capturing the heart of India

For the uninitiated, kabaddi, the ancient Indian game that is taking the world’s second-most populous country by storm, looks far too simple to be a professional sport. A hybrid of rugby, touch football and the playground game known in England as British Bulldog and in the United States as Red Rover (“Red rover, red rover, let Tommy come over...”), kabaddi (pronounced kuh-bud-DEE) uses no balls, pucks, nets, goal posts, hoops, holes, rackets, clubs, sticks or bats. It is so unknown in the West that on August 8, 2017, ESPNU, the American digital cable and satellite sports television channel owned by ESPN Inc., showcased what it termed “the finest in seldom seen sports,” including the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup Final. An exhibition match was played at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, but it did not catch on internationally.
