  India reported a record 412,262 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday and a record 3,980 daily death toll, as a second wave of infections swamps the health system and spreads from cities into the vast countryside. COVID-19 infections in the world's second most populous nation have surged past 21 million, with a death toll of 230,168, health ministry data show. With hospitals scrabbling for beds and oxygen in response to the surge in infections, the World Health Organization said in a weekly report that India accounted for nearly half the coronavirus cases reported worldwide last week and a quarter of the deaths. As the country on Thursday surpassed the grim milestone of 9 million total infections, the official daily numbers appear to show a marked slowdown in the spread of the disease. With 92 new Covid-19 positive cases, the total number of positive coronavirus cases has risen to 2,248 in the national capital. According to the health department, the count is inclusive of 1,476 patients who are active cases and 724 patients have recovered. With one new fatality reported due to the virus, the number of deaths in the national capital rose to 48. With 1,486 new cases and 49 deaths in the last 24 hours, India's total number of coronavirus positive cases have risen to 20,471 while the toll stands at 652 on Wednesday, the said Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
