Web series vs music video: TMC, BJP joust on social media as LS polls near

In a bid to reach out to voters, especially the young one, the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP in West Bengal have extended their fight to the social media with innovative ideas and catchy jingles. Dedicated teams comprising hundreds of volunteers are slogging away to ensure that the "Jumla metre" and " Pradhan mantri hisab do " campaign of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the "Main Bhi Chowkidar" music video of the BJP reach their target audience. From coming out with web series to catchy online songs to campaigns, both the parties are looking at making optimal use of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, besides traditional emails and SMS. CBI row: SC directions will help truth emerge soon, sans bias, says Jaitley

The government on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court's intervention in the ongoing CBI row and said it will strengthen the investigation process and help the truth to come out "soon and without bias". "The Supreme Court direction to set a two-week time frame is a positive development and it would further strengthen the fairness criteria of the investigation. Appointment of a retired Supreme Court judge would ensure a fair inquiry," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said here. His remarks come after the apex court a former judge, A.K. Patnaik, to supervise the inquiry into the allegations against Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Alok Verma while giving two weeks time to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to complete the probe. Hindi a symbol of socio-political, linguistic unity of India: Naidu

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu Friday termed Hindi as the symbol of socio-political and linguistic unity of the country and pitched for the translation of literature of regional languages into it. Addressing an event organised on the occasion of ' Hindi Divas ', Naidu said Hindi was the main communication language among the freedom fighters of the country and it was spoken and understood by most of the people in the country. "It was the symbol of social, political, religious and linguistic unity of the country. Even today, these qualities make it acceptable among all other languages," he said. The Vice President said all Indian languages were vibrant and each of them had its own literature, dictionary and idioms. "There should be more translation into Hindi, the literature of all regional languages, so that we can access the literature of all Indian languages easily," he said. Read Complete Article

Gutka scam: CBI raids at residences of Tamil Nadu health minister, DGP

The CBI today carried out searches at around 40 locations in Tamil Nadu, including at the residences of state's health minister and the director general of police, in connection with the Gutka scam , officials said. They said the searches are spread across the state but did not reveal exact locations at this stage, saying it may hamper the ongoing operations. The residences of Health Minister C Vijayabaskar and DGPTK Rajendran, besides that of a former senior police official, among others are being searched, they said. The scam came to light on July 8, 2017, when income tax sleuths raided the godown, offices and residences of a pan masala and gutka (a concoction of tobacco and pan masala) manufacturer in Tamil Nadu, who had been facing charges of tax evasion to the tune of Rs 250 crore.
