INX Media case: SC rejects P Chidambaram's plea for anticipatory bail



Supreme Court on Thursday refused anticipatory bail to former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
According to Bar & Bench, the apex court said that an anticipatory bail cannot be granted as a matter of right. Further, the court said that it is to be exercised sparingly in cases of economic offences.
"Granting anticipatory bail at the initial stage may frustrate the investigation. It’s not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail. Economic offences stand at different footing and it has to be dealt with different approach", the court said
Further, the Supreme Court said that Chidambaram was free to move the trial court and apply for regular bail. Read More

India to test 100-yr-old vaccine on adults as war on Covid-19 hots up

Serum Institute’s recombinant BCG vaccine would be the first vaccine candidate in India to start human trials within the next two weeks. This is to test if the vaccine, administered at birth to Indians to fight tuberculosis, can also boost immunity in adults against the novel coronavirus. If all goes well, the vaccine, which has a proven safety track record, can be in the market by the end of this year. Serum Institute can make 300-400 million doses of this vaccine.   In Punjab, the age group 0-50 accounts for 73.7 per cent of the total state case load. The mortality rate among those infected in this age group, however, is 26.8 per cent. The age group 51-90 accounts for 26.3 per cent of infections but has a mortality rate of 72.4 per cent.
