Will India stay indoors after April 15? Here's what the PM indicated




On Wednesday, while interacting with the Parliament floor leaders via videoconferencing, the prime minister said he would take a decision on extending the lockdown after a meeting with chief ministers on Saturday.
According to a government statement, the PM said “several state governments, district administrations, and experts had asked for an extension of the lockdown”.
However, this is not the first time that PM has hinted at an extension. Last week, the prime minister suggested a graded lifting of the 21-day lockdown for areas other than the Covid-19 hotspots in the country.
Several state governments have also put forward their suggestions on graded lifting, including running special trains, and allowing some industrial activity. Read More

India to test 100-yr-old vaccine on adults as war on Covid-19 hots up

Serum Institute’s recombinant BCG vaccine would be the first vaccine candidate in India to start human trials within the next two weeks. This is to test if the vaccine, administered at birth to Indians to fight tuberculosis, can also boost immunity in adults against the novel coronavirus. If all goes well, the vaccine, which has a proven safety track record, can be in the market by the end of this year. Serum Institute can make 300-400 million doses of this vaccine. The Bacillus Calmette-Gurein (BCG) vaccine named after French microbiologists Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin, is given to infants in India upon birth.   In Punjab, the age group 0-50 accounts for 73.7 per cent of the total state case load. The mortality rate among those infected in this age group, however, is 26.8 per cent. The age group 51-90 accounts for 26.3 per cent of infections but has a mortality rate of 72.4 per cent. Comorbidities, experts say, are the major reason driving the high fatality rate among the elderly. Till August 28, about 17 per cent of infections were noted in the age group 41-50, some 15 per cent for those aged 51-60, around eight per cent for the 61-70 group and only three per cent for 71-80.
