Oppo A5s review: Impressive design, capable battery but weak performance

Image
Oppo A5S is a budget smartphone from the stable of Chinese smartphone maker Oppo. Successor of the Oppo A3S, the smartphone boasts a notch-based screen, dual camera module on the back and a powerful battery that makes it an interesting proposition in its segment. Priced at Rs 9,990, the phone competes with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Realme 3 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1. Let’s take a look at how the phone fares in terms of design, features and performance: Design and display The Oppo A5s has a glossy plastic build that looks mediocre but has a sturdy feel to it. The phone’s front is dominated by a 6.2-inch display, which covers almost the entire front, leaving thin bezels on three-sides and a thick one on the bottom. The phone’s back is made out of glossy plastic, which is a fingerprint magnet. Thankfully, the phone comes with a transparent case to protect the phone from scratches and smudges. The Oppo A5s has a 6.2-inch waterdrop-shaped notch display of HD+ resolution, stret

Realme C2 review: Smudge free design and good battery makes it a worthy buy

Image
Chinese smartphone brand Realme recently introduced the Realme C2 , a successor of company’s entry level smartphone the Realme C1. The Realme C2 is a decent upgrade from it's predecessor. For starters, it packs a MediaTek Helio P22 processor (12 nm) as opposed to Snapdragon 450 chipset (14 nm) in Realme C1. The phone also packs a 6.1-inch HD+ display and is powered by a 4,000mAh battery. Business Standard reviewed the Realme C1 on several parameters to see how it fares in comparison to competition in the same segment. Here are our observations: Design & Display Realme is back with its diamond cut design and this time the diamond-cut back has micro-patterns that offer a secure grip . The phone is sturdy and feels light in the hands. The textured back does not attract smudges and is offered in Diamond Blue and Diamond Black colours. There is no fingerprint sensor on the back so you have to rely on the face unlock. Although the phone feels comfortable to hold but becau

US welcomes PM Modi's post-election statement on inclusivity

Image
The US has welcomed the post-election statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on inclusivity, saying his re-election was a "clear" mandate for his vision of a strong, inclusive and prosperous India that plays a leading role on the global stage. Modi last week said that his government will now begin "a new journey to build a new India with new energy" and reached out to minorities, saying the ruling alliance must win their trust and work without any discrimination. "We certainly welcome Prime Minister Modi's post-election statements that have emphasised inclusivity that no one should be left behind, that there should be no distinction between Indian citizens, that the government should rule with the trust of everyone," a senior State Department official told a group of reporters hours after Modi was sworn in for the second five-year term in office. ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Pak vs WI preview: Amir to boost Pak playing 11

Image
Pakistan and West Indies, two most unpredictable sides, will take on each other in their first cricket World Cup match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Friday. Much to Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Pakistan's relief, frontline paceman Mohammad Amir has been declared fit and he is likely to feature in Pakistan's playing 11. Jason Holder-led West Indies made the intentions clear right from their warm-up fixture against New Zealand where the Caribbeans scored a massive 421 runs on the other hand Pakistan were stunned by Afghanistan in their warm up match and their second, against Bangladesh, was washed out without a ball bowled. Pakistan, who have lost their last 10 ODIs including a 5-0 whitewash by Australia and 4-0 thumping by England, didn't have the most ideal preparation for the showpiece event. Pakistan have only won three times in 10 World Cup matches against the two-time world champions, including a thumping 150-run loss at Christchurch in 2015. Plenty of cloud cover

Now GPS can detect early signs of megaquakes, improving the warning system

Image
Scientists have discovered a way to identify indicators of a mega earthquake using GPS-based information, an advance that may help improve early warning systems for quakes. The researchers from University of Oregon in the US combed through databases of earthquakes since the early 1990s have discovered a possible defining moment 10-15 seconds into an event that could signal a magnitude seven or larger quake. Likewise, that moment -- gleaned from GPS data on the peak rate of acceleration of ground displacement -- can indicate a smaller event. GPS picks up an initial signal of movement along a fault similar to a seismometer detecting the smallest first moments of an earthquake. Such GPS-based information potentially could enhance the value of earthquake early warning systems, said Diego Melgar, a professor in the University of Oregon. The physics-heavy analyses of two databases detected a point in time where a newly initiated earthquake transitions into a slip pulse where

No 10% EWS quota for PG medical courses in Maharashtra for 2019-20: SC

Image
The Supreme Court on Thursday said that 10 per cent EWS quota cannot be applied to PG medical courses in Maharashtra for the academic year 2019-20 as admission process started long before the provision came into force. A vacation bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose said 10 per cent EWS quota cannot be granted at the cost of others unless additional seats are created by the Medical Council of India. The bench noted that admission process for PG medical courses started in November 2018 while the 103 Constitutional amendment granting 10 per cent EWS quota was passed in January this year. The bench said the Maharashtra government enforced the 10 EWS quota for PG medical courses in March. "Ten per cent EWS quota cannot be granted to the ongoing admission process. You cannot change the rules of game when the game is on," the bench said. Read More Article Source -> Business Standard

Tata Sky Binge review: A slightly overpriced bridge between internet and TV

Image
Tata Sky Binge is an app-based platform that allows you to stream digital content from a diverse mix of over-the-top (OTT) platforms through a single platform and a single subscription fee of Rs 249 a month. The app is accessible through a special Tata Sky edition of Amazon FireTV stick which allows you to watch content of your choice on a supported big television screen. The special-edition FireTV stick comes pre-loaded with the Tata Sky Binge app, which includes content from various OTT platforms — Hotstar, Sun NXT, Eros Now and Hungama Play. Surprisingly, Amazon’s own Prime Video is not part of the package and requires a separate subscription for streaming of content. However, under its launch offer, Tata Sky is providing a free three-month subscription to Amazon Prime services, which includes Prime Videos, Prime Music and other Prime services. To activate the Binge app, existing Tata Sky users need to open the Binge app and use consumer identity number or subscription ID

Don't expect Boeing 737 MAX to return to service until August, says IATA

Image
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects it could take until August before the Boeing Co 737 MAX returns to service, the airline group's head said on Wednesday, adding that the final say on the timing rested with regulators. The 737 MAX was grounded globally in March after a crash in Ethiopia killed all 157 people on board, the model's second deadly crash in five months. "We do not expect something before 10 to 12 weeks in re-entry into service," IATA Director General Alexandre de Juniac told reporters in Seoul. "But it is not our hands. That is in the hands of regulators." IATA plans to organise a summit with airlines, regulators and Boeing in 5 to 7 weeks to discuss what is needed for the 737 MAX to return to service, he said. The airline industry has had a tough six months with fuel, labour and infrastructure costs increasing and trade tensions rising in addition to the 737 MAX grounding, de Juniac said. IATA's Decemb

Mamata to skip Modi swearing-in over 'untrue claims' of BJP workers' murder

Image
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday decided not to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narenda Modi as prime minister citing 'untrue" claims by BJP that 54 of the party workers were murdered in political violence in Bengal. Banerjee had on Tuesday confirmed her presence at the ceremony to be held on May 30. "Congratulations, new Prime Minister, Narendra Modiji. It was my plan to accept the "constitutional invitation" and attend the oath taking ceremony. However, in last one year, I am seeing media reports that the BJP are claiming 54 people have been murdered in political violence in Bengal. This is completely untrue. There have been no political murders in Bengal. These deaths may have occurred due to personal enemity, family quarrels and other disputes, nothing related to politics. There is no such record with us," Banerjee said in a tweet. "So I am sorry, Narendra Modi ji, this has compelled me not to attend the ceremony.

Mumbai-based Zaidi, a freelance writer whose work includes reportage, essays, short stories, poetry and plays, won for her entry Bread, Cement, Cactus' combining memoir and reportage to explore concepts of home and belonging rooted in her experience of contemporary life in India. What really appealed to me about the Nine Dots Prize was the way it encourages entrants to think without borders or restraints. Now in its second cycle, the prize challenged entrants to answer the question Is there still no place like home?' in a 3,000-word

Mirage probe puts spotlight on Dassault's flight computer's behaviour

Image
On February 1, two experienced Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots died when their newly upgraded Mirage 2000-I fighter crashed while taking-off in Bengaluru. A Court of Inquiry (CoI) investigating the accident is now confronting the worrying possibility of a glitch in the Mirage 2000’s flight computer that kicks in without warning, causing the aircraft to behave unpredictably. IAF flight records examined by the CoI have revealed at least four such incidents in the past. In each of these, a flying Mirage 2000 has, suddenly and without command from the pilot, jerked its nose towards the ground. Then, as spontaneously, the nose was jerked upwards. Each time, the aircraft has continued this up-and-down jerking — termed “pitch oscillations” — for several seconds before resuming normal flight. Members of the CoI from the IAF, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), the National Aeronautics Laboratory (NAL) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) are veering round to the belief that such an i

LG 27UK650 review: Capable 4K monitor for those upgrading from regular one

Image
Gamers, content creators and those in creative fields — designers, video editors, etc — might agree that the quality of the computer monitor can make a huge difference to the overall user experience. While a regular monitor can get the work done somehow, a screen with value-added utility features like an enhanced refresh rate, HDR support, etc, not only increase convenience but also result in improved productivity and output. The LG 27UK650 is one of those monitors that come packed with more than just the basic utility features, and that makes it a decent choice for first time users making a plunge in the field of gaming or content creation. The monitor has a 27-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution IPS panel that supports HDR10 (SDR to HDR upscale). While the high-resolution panel allows it to render small details with good precision, the SDR to HDR content upscaling gives boost to colour information, making it easy to identify objects that otherwise do not show up on regular mon

Google's Duplex uses AI to mimic humans, but only sometimes

Image
On a recent afternoon at the Lao Thai Kitchen restaurant, the telephone rang and the caller ID read “ Google Assistant .” Jimmy Tran, a waiter, answered the phone. The caller was a man with an Irish accent hoping to book a dinner reservation for two on the weekend. This was no ordinary booking. It came through Google Duplex, a free service that uses artificial intelligence to call restaurants and — mimicking a human voice — speak on our behalf to book a table. The feature, which had a limited release about a year ago, recently became available to a larger number of Android devices and iPhones. The voice of the Irish man sounded eerily human. When asked whether he was a robot, the caller immediately replied, “No, I’m not a robot,” and laughed. “ It sounded very real,” Tran said in an interview after hanging up the call with Google. “It was perfectly human.” Google later confirmed, to our disappointment, that the caller had been telling the truth: He was a person working in a
