Samsung launches updated programme to recycle old Galaxy devices

  Samsung Electronics has unveiled an updated programme to recycle old mobile devices at home with Internet of Things (IoT) technology as part of the South Korean tech titan's vision for a sustainable future. Samsung unveiled "Galaxy Upcycling at Home" programme at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021 late on Monday. "The new programme reimagines the lifecycle of an older Galaxy phone and offers consumers options on how they might be able to repurpose their device to create a variety of convenient IoT tools," the company said. The latest programme is an update to its Galaxy Upcycling campaign that was recognised by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a solution for used mobile devices. Under the new programme, Samsung said its old Galaxy smartphones can be reborn as smart monitoring devices that can detect baby's crying or check companion animal's moves and leverage IoT technologies to operate other functions at people's smart home

Microsoft partners chip maker Arm to boost AI innovation for IoT devices

  SoftBank-owned UK chip maker Arm has partnered with Microsoft to create Azure-based tools to enable developers transfer data from Arm-based Internet of Things (IoT) devices to Azure Cloud. The partnership will enable developers to easily target a broad range of Arm-based devices like intelligent computer-vision-enabled cameras, connected vehicles, AI gateways and intelligent appliances. With over 30 billion active IoT devices in the world with 400 per cent growth over the past three years, the industry is moving incredibly fast. "Arm's leading silicon architecture combined with their broad ecosystem and commitment to optimising developer experiences will enable this partnership to accelerate AI innovation for IoT devices, delivering better solutions and a better future for end-users," said Moe Tanabian, Vice President, General Manager-Azure Edge Devices. Coronavirus: This IoT device can help you clean your hands the right way

Researchers have developed an Internet of things (IoT) device for soap dispensers which they say can ensure that people wash their hands properly for over 20 seconds as per the World Health Organization guidelines for COVID-19 . The device called '20Sec4Life' will glow, beep and play a musical tone for more than 20 seconds to help people disinfect their hands properly, according to the researchers from Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab. The splash-proof device can be mounted on any liquid soap dispenser and operates using a battery, they said. According to WHO, promoting good hand hygiene is one of the most basic yet powerful tools that countries must leverage to reduce the spread of COVID-9. Read More

iQOO brings its first 5G smartphone in India; Price starts at Rs 36,990

Chinese behemoth BBK Group's smartphone brand iQOO on Tuesday launched its first flagship smartphone iQOO 3 with 5G capabilities in India, starting from Rs 36,990. The smartphone will be available in three colour options and three variants -- Rs 36,990 (8+128GB 4G), Rs 39,990 (8+256GB 4G) and Rs 44,990 (12+256GB 5G). The device will go on sale starting from March 4 at 12 noon on Flipkart and iqoo.com, said the company. 'With iQOO 3, we have introduced industry's latest innovations like 5G enabled Snapdragon 865 processor for tech-savvy buyers. iQOO 3 offers highly personalized, cutting-edge and innovative solutions that make it easy for users to get the most out of their device,' said Gagan Arora, Director-Marketing, iQOO India. Microsoft, Nokia collaborate once again after failed $7bn smartphone deal

After a failed $7 billion acquisition of Nokia's smartphone business five years back, Microsoft has announced a strategic collaboration with the Finnish company to accelerate transformation and innovation across industries with Cloud, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT). The new partnership brings together Microsoft cloud solutions and Nokia's expertise in mission-critical networking, to help enterprises and communications service providers (CSPs) transform their businesses. Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan had earlier said that India wants to be a frontrunner in adopting 5G technology Economy & Policy News : Telecom   industry body   COAI   has said auction of spectrum for 5G services should happen only around the second half of 2019 as it would offer   telcos   better visibility into market dynamics and potential revenue streams of the next-generation mobile services. The pricing of 5G spectrum, which would be required in larger blocks or chunks than seen before, would also be "critical component of success of these auctions" that should ideally take place in the "mid to latter part of 2019", Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) Director General Rajan Mathews told   PTI. Further, the ongoing financial stress in the industry will also have to be dealt with for the   telecom   operators to make investments into 5G auctions, he said.
