Maharashtra: SC orders Fadnavis govt to face floor test on Wednesday

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has to prove his majority in the Assembly on Wednesday, said the Supreme Court as it ruled on a petition filed against the governor’s surprise decision to swear in the BJP leader. The floor test will be through open ballot and it will be recorded on video, the court said in a decision welcomed by the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party, and the Congress. The court ordered Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to ensure that all newly elected MLAs are sworn in by 5 pm on Wednesday. A pro-tem or temporary Speaker will administer the oath, said a bench comprising Justices N V Ramana, Ashok Bhushan and Sanjiv Khanna. "In a situation wherein, if the floor test is delayed, there is a possibility of horse-trading, it becomes incumbent upon the Court to act to protect democratic values. Fadnavis meets Maharashtra governor, urges him to release funds for farmers

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Friday called on Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and urged him to release funds for farmers affected by unseasonal rains. Fadnavis also sought reopening and smooth functioning of the CM Relief Fund through the governor's office to ensure timely help for needy persons as the state was currently under President's rule. He said the governor had accepted both his demands. The former CM put forward the demands when he called on Koshyari at Raj Bhavan in the morning. Fadnavis's meeting with the governor came at a time when its estranged ally Shiv Sena is making efforts to form the government with the help of the Congress and the NCP, its political rivals till recently. After the meeting, Fadnavis tweeted, "Met Hon Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari ji at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai to request release of funds to the farmers affected due to unseasonal rains. Shiv Sena says next Maharashtra CM will be from party, rules out NCP role

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Tuesday said Maharashtra's next chief minister will be from his party, as the deadlock to form a new government in state continued after election results on October 28. "The politics of Maharashtra is changing...in our fight for justice, we will win," said Raut, who is also a member of the Rajya Sabha. "The decision on Maharashtra will be taken in Maharashtra, the chief minister will be from the Shiv Sena," Raut said in Mumbai, ruling out a role for Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar. The Bharatiya Janata Party won 105 seats, its ally Shiv Sena 56, the NCP 54, and Congress 44 in the elections. The Shiv Sena has been demanding the chief minister’s post after elections gave the saffron alliance a combined seat strength of 161, way past the 145 majority mark in the 288-member House. CM Devendra Fadnavis flags off trial run of Navi Mumbai Metro Line one

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday flagged off the trial run of the first Belapur to Pendhar Metro rail project in Navi Mumbai. Out of the four lines proposed for Navi Mumbai Metro, Line one will have a total of 11 stations on the 11.10 km corridor being constructed at the cost of Rs 3,063 crore. "Navi Mumbai Metro will make commute easy for inhabitants residing at Kharghar, Taloja and Pendhar. At present, the travel time to reach Taloja from Belapur is 45 minutes. "Once the metro becomes operational, this will reduce to 18 minutes, which will be a great relief for Navi Mumbaikars using the route," CIDCO said in a statement issued here. At the event, Fadnavis also distributed allotment letters to 10,000 successful candidates from CIDCO Housing Scheme-2018. Maharashtra farmers' protest: Thousands begin march from Thane to Mumbai

Demanding compensation for drought and the transfer of forest rights to tribals, thousands of farmers and tribals began a two-day march from Thane to Mumbai on Wednesday, eight months after a similar protest that started from Nashik. Magsaysay award winner Dr Rajendra Singh, also known as Waterman of India, is among the marchers. They started walking Wednesday afternoon and will reach the Somaiyya Ground in Mumbai's Sion area where they will halt for the night. They will reach Azad Maidan in south Mumbai early on Thursday and will try to hold a demonstration near Vidhan Bhawan, where the state legislature session is underway, a leader of the march said. The participants are mostly from Thane, Bhusawal and Marathwada regions, he said.
