INX case: AIIMS asked to form a medical board on Chidambaram's condition

The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the AIIMS director to constitute a medical board today itself to give opinion on the health of former finance minister P Chidambaram, who is suffering from Crohn's disease. The high court said Hyderabad-based gastroenterologist Nageshwara Redybe included in the board to give his opinion on Chidambaram's medical condition, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. Chidambaram has sought interim bail in the INX media money laundering case on medical grounds, saying his condition is deteriorating and he needs to be in a sterile environment. Justice Suresh Kait said the board will sit today to discuss Chidambaram's medical condition and the report be placed before the court which will hear the matter on Friday. INX Media case: Delhi HC seeks ED response on Chidambaram's bail plea

The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the response of the Enforcement Directorate on a bail plea of senior Congress leader and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram in the INX media money-laundering case . Justice Suresh Kait issued a notice to the ED on the bail application and asked the agency to file its reply within a week. The court fixed the matter for further hearing on November 4. INX Media case: ED arrests Chidambaram; to produce him in PMLA court today

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested former finance minister P Chidambaram in connection with INX-Media money laundering case following interrogation in the Tihar Jail on Wednesday morning. Senior Congress leader spent 55 days in CBI and judicial custody in the corruption charges in the same case. The enforcement agency is likely to produce him in the special PMLA court in the afternoon. Sources say that ED requires custodial interrogation to confront the evidence it has come across during the probe. The ED's special public prosecutors on Friday moved a plea seeking production warrant of the senior Congress leader. On Tuesday, Special court Judge allowed the ED to interrogate Chidambaram in Tihar jail and arrest him, if necessary, in connection with the INX Media money laundering case. The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the CBI's response on a plea of former finance minister P Chidambaram, lodged in Tihar Jail in the INX Media corruption case , seeking bail in the matter. Justice Suresh Kait issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Chidambaram's bail plea in which he has claimed that it was the case of "political vendetta". The 73-year old-Congress leader also withdrew from the high court his plea challenging the trial court's order remanding him to judicial custody till September 19. INX Media case: SC rejects P Chidambaram's plea for anticipatory bail

Supreme Court on Thursday refused anticipatory bail to former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). According to Bar & Bench, the apex court said that an anticipatory bail cannot be granted as a matter of right. Further, the court said that it is to be exercised sparingly in cases of economic offences. "Granting anticipatory bail at the initial stage may frustrate the investigation. It’s not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail. Economic offences stand at different footing and it has to be dealt with different approach", the court said Further, the Supreme Court said that Chidambaram was free to move the trial court and apply for regular bail. INX media case: CBI court extends Chidambaram's custody till September 2

A Delhi Court extended by three days the CBI custody of P Chidambaram, arrested in a corruption case arising from the INX Media scam . He will be in the CBI custody till September 2. The order was passed by Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar before whom Chidambaram was produced on expiry of four-day custodial interrogation granted on August 26. He has already been subjected to custodial interrogation by the CBI for eight days since his arrest on August 21, after the Delhi High Court on August 20 dismissed his anticipatory bail plea. "Investigation being the prerogative of the investigating officer and given the fact that the record is voluminous and accused needs to be confronted. Thus, more time is required. SC refuses to entertain P Chidambaram's petition, calls it 'infructuous'

In a setback for Congress leader P Chidambaram , the Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain his petition challenging the dismissal of anticipatory bail in a corruption case lodged by the CBI in the INX media scam . At the outset, a bench comprising justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna said since Chidambaram has already been arrested and is in the custody of the CBI, his appeal in the case has become infructuous. However, the bench said Chidambaram is at a liberty to seek remedy in accordance with the law. Chidambaram, whose CBI custody is ending today, will be produced before a trial court where the agency can further seek his custody. However, senior advocates Kapil Sibal and A M Singhvi said in their arguments that the CBI ensured that Chidambaram's plea become infructuous by arresting him when he was seeking protection from arrest. INX media case: P Chidambaram spends quiet night at CBI headquarters

Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram spent a quiet night in the CBI guest house on the ground floor of the agency headquarters after his dramatic arrest from his posh residence in the INX media corruption case , officials said on Thursday. Chidambaram, 73, was kept in the suite 5 of the guest house, they said. It is normal for the agency to keep high security arrested accused in the guest house to ensure proper security and monitoring, the officials said. Chidambaram, as then union home minister had participated in the inauguration of the new CBI headquarters in Delhi's Lodhi Road area in 2011 — the same building where he spent Wednesday night after being arrested by the Central probe agency. The top court said the defects in the petition were removed just now and it "cannot be listed for hearing today itself". "Without listing of the petition, we cannot hear the matter," said a bench comprising Justices N V Ramana, M Shantanagoudar and Ajay Rastogi. "Sorry Mr Sibal. INX media case: Karti Chidambaram appears before ED to record his statement

Karti Chidambaram , son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in connection with a money laundering probe against him. Officials said Karti Chidambaram was summoned to record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He arrived at the ED office in Jamnagar House in central Delhi at about 11 am. It is understood that he would be questioned in the INX Media case , officials said. The agency has alleged that Karti received money from INX Media, using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against it in a case of violation of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) conditions to receive investment from Mauritius.
