Jack Ma takes on Elon Musk over future of Artificial Intelligence

Image
Jack Ma believes artificial intelligence poses no threat to humanity, but Elon Musk called that "famous last words" as the billionaire tech tycoons faced off Thursday in an occasionally animated debate on futurism in Shanghai. The Chinese co-founder of Alibaba and the maverick industrialist behind Tesla and SpaceX frequently pulled pained expressions and raised eyebrows as they kicked off an AI conference with a dialogue that challenged attendees to keep up, veering from technology to Mars, death, and jobs. However, the hot topic in the hour-long talk was AI, which has provoked increasing concern among scientists such as late British cosmologist Stephen Hawking who warned that it will eventually turn on and "annihilate" humanity. "Computers may be clever, but human beings are much smarter," Ma said. "We invented the computer -- I've never seen a computer invent a human being." While insisting that he is "not a tech guy,&quo

Draft CSAT paper in Hindi, then translate it to English: RSS to UPSC

Image
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh wants the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to draft the question papers for the civil services examination in Hindi, and then translate them into other regional languages and English. The RSS-linked Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas (SSUN) committee is of the view that when the question paper is set in English and translated into vernacular languages, the essence of the question is lost in translation. This puts students taking the exam in Hindi and other languages at a disadvantage. The SSUN has made the suggestion to the Modi government, reported The Print. Devendra Singh, head of the SSUN’s competitive exams reform committee said that almost 50 per cent of the words lose their meaning in translation. He cites the examples of words such as “population”, which is generally “jansankhya” in Hindi but was translated as “samashti” in one question paper. “Data”, which should be “data” in Hindi as well, was translated to “dutt”, he added. “ If

PV Sindhu creates history, wins badminton world championship gold

Image
P V Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win badminton World Championships gold by beating familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a lop-sided final Basel on Sunday. The Indian won 21-7 21-7 in the summit clash that lasted just 38 minutes. Two years after being robbed off the gold by Okuhara in an epic 110-minute final at Glasgow that went down as one of the greatest battles in badminton history, Sindhu finally exorcised the ghost of that heart-wrenching loss with a completely dominating win over the same opponent. It was Sindhu's fifth World Championships medal -- joint most for a woman singles player with former Olympics and world champion Zhang Ning of China -- to go with the two successive silvers and a couple of bronze medals. Sindhu has also won an Olympic silver in 2016 Rio Games, a silver at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, an Asian Games silver at Jakarta and the BWF World Tour Finals last year. Motorola One Action review: Remarkable for innovation, wanting in prowess

Image
Once a dominant smartphone brand, Motorola lost its market share as other Chinese brands saw a sudden surge and challenged its monopoly in the budget and midrange smartphone segment in India. But now, with back-to-back launches, the company seems to have somewhat got its mojo back. After earlier launching the photography-centric Motorola One Vision (review), Motorola, now owned by Chinese electronics major Lenovo, on August 23 launched the videography-centric Motorola One Action (Rs 13,999) in India. The Motorola One Vision and Motorola One Action are similar in design, features and specifications, but they have different sets of optics for different audiences. As the name suggests, the Motorola One Action aims to replace your action cameras by providing a dedicated ultra-wide sensor for videography. We reviewed this phone to see if it can really replace action cameras like GoPro, and how it fares in comparison with the Motorola One Vision, especially in imaging performance:

SC refuses to entertain P Chidambaram's petition, calls it 'infructuous'

Image
In a setback for Congress leader P Chidambaram , the Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain his petition challenging the dismissal of anticipatory bail in a corruption case lodged by the CBI in the INX media scam . At the outset, a bench comprising justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna said since Chidambaram has already been arrested and is in the custody of the CBI, his appeal in the case has become infructuous. However, the bench said Chidambaram is at a liberty to seek remedy in accordance with the law. Chidambaram, whose CBI custody is ending today, will be produced before a trial court where the agency can further seek his custody. However, senior advocates Kapil Sibal and A M Singhvi said in their arguments that the CBI ensured that Chidambaram's plea become infructuous by arresting him when he was seeking protection from arrest. They said that immediately after the high court had dismissed his anticipatory bail plea in both CBI and ED cases on May 20, the
