Republic Day violence: SC stays arrest of Tharoor, Sardesai & others

  The Supreme Court Tuesday stayed the arrest of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and six journalists including Rajdeep Sardesai in connection with FIRs lodged against them for their alleged "misleading" tweets on the violence during the farmers' tractor rally here on the Republic Day . A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde issued notices and sought responses from the Centre and others on the petitions filed by Tharoor, Sardesai and journalists Mrinal Pande, Zafar Agha, Paresh Nath, Vinod K Jose and Anant Nath. When the bench said it was issuing notice in the matter, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Tharoor, said that no coercive action be taken against the petitioners in the meantime. Nothing is going to happen. Where is the danger, said the bench, also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian. States can't say they won't implement CAA, resolutions 'political': Tharoor

States cannot say they will not implement a new citizenship law and resolutions some legislatures have passed against it are a "political gesture", said Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday. Tharoor's party colleague Kapil Sibal last week said states cannot deny implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a law passed by Parliament. Sibal later called CAA "unconstitutional", as his statement contradicted the Congress government’s decision in Punjab to pass an Assembly resolution against the law . The Delhi Police has sought that Tharoor be summoned as an accused, claiming there was sufficient evidence against him Current Affairs News : A special court, designated to try lawmakers in regard to   Sunanda Pushkar death   case, will on Monday consider Delhi Police's charge sheet against   Congress MP and Pushkar's husband   Shashi Tharoor. The police has sought that Tharoor be summoned as an accused, claiming there was sufficient evidence against him. Earlier on May 24, a Delhi Court, which was hearing the   Sunanda Pushkar death   case, transferred the matter to the   Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM), Samar Vishal. "Since he (Tharoor) is a sitting Member of Parliament, the matter is being sent to the special designated court for politicians, that is ACMM Samar Vishal.
