Mumbai police on 'high alert' for New Year's Eve celebrations

  The Mumbai Police are on " high alert " and have put in place "anti-sabotage and anti-terror" measures considering the threat to the financial capital during the New Year celebrations , an official said on Thursday. Around 35,000 police personnel will be deployed on the streets of Mumbai to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents on New Year's Eve, the official said. "We are on high alert. We have put in place anti- terror and anti-sabotage measures in view of the New Year celebrations," Mumbai police spokesperson DCP S Chaitanya said. "There will be adequate deployment of police in the city. Nakabandi (road blockades) will be put in place on important roads," he said. The Maharashtra government has put in place a night curfew between 11 pm and 6 am, prohibiting gathering of five or more persons in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Read More

Restrictions in place for New Year celebrations: What's allowed, what's not

  The Delhi government has imposed a night curfew on December 31 and January 1 from 11 pm to 6 am to avoid large gathering during New Year celebrations . In Delhi, not more than 5 people will be allowed to assemble at public places during night curfew to avoid large gatherings. However, there will be no restriction on interstate movement of people and goods during night curfew in Delhi. The move comes after Centre asked to impose restrictions on New year celebrations after assessing the local situation, though the final decision has been left to them. Maharashtra government has announced an extension of lockdown in the state till 31st January next year. The Uddhav government had earlier imposed a night curfew in all the municipal areas of the state. The curfew is in place from 11 pm to 6 am and will remain in force till 5th January. Read More

Barcelona was on alert on Monday after the US State Department warned of the risk of a terrorist attack in Spain's second-largest city during the Christmas holidays. "Exercise heightened caution around areas of vehicle movement, including buses, in the Las Ramblas area of Barcelona during Christmas and New Year's. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, and other public areas," the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a tweet on Sunday.
