PLAYFIT SW75 review: Feature-rich budget smartwatch with impressive design

Image
Wearables have seamlessly blended in our everyday life and unsurprisingly, the number of companies making them have proliferated. One of the latest in the fray is a Delhi-based tech start-up 'PLAY' who recently launched its PLAYFIT SW75 Smartwatch. We reviewed it for a few weeks and here's how it fared. Design From the get-go, you can see that the smartwatch's design is inspired by the best there is -- Apple Watch. Right from the square-shaped body to curved edges, PLAY's SW75 smartwatch is Apple Watch through and through complete with stainless-steel casing. When the screen isn't lit, it gives the look of a bezel-less watch. At 2,999, you wouldn't normally expect such a premier look. There is a metallic button on each side (left to enter an option, and right to exit it). For display, you get a 1.3-inch touch LCD panel with a resolution of 260x260 that's bright enough even in full daylight. The display is protected by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Gla

AGR verdict: Reliance Jio says telcos have sufficient capacity to pay dues

Image
Strongly opposing a bailout of telecom companies at taxpayers' expense, Reliance Jio on Thursday wrote to Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad saying firms that have been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay past statutory dues have "sufficient" financial capacity to clear their liabilities. It also slammed the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) for writing ex-parte to the government on the financial distress in the sector, saying the body was "blackmailing" to "extract relief from the government" after all legal recourse had expired. "We submit that the so-called affected service providers have sufficient financial capacity to pay the government dues by monetising their existing assets/investments and by issuing fresh equity in their companies," it wrote to Prasad. The high court said Hyderabad-based gastroenterologist Nageshwara Redybe included in the board to give his opinion on Chidambaram's medical condition, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. Pegasus spyware: Bhima-Koregaon activists' lawyer got warning from WhatsApp

Image
Over the last two years, Nagpur-based human rights lawyer Nihalsing Rathod has received receiving calls on WhatsApp from unknown numbers. These calls would be made from international numbers, and would invariably turn out to be a group call. The moment Rathod answered them, the call would disconnect. He assumed these were innocuous calls made to his number but as a safety measure, reported each of the “suspicious calls” to WhatsApp. On October 7, 2019, Rathod, however, was contacted by a senior researcher from the Toronto University’s CitizenLab informing him that he faced a “specific digital risk”. “ John Scott-Railton, the senior researcher told me that his lab had followed my work and during their research had found out that my profile was under a surveillance attack. All those calls made to me for two years suddenly began to make sense,” Rathod told The Wire. CitizenLab was one of the first few organisations to examine how the Israeli surveillance firm NSO Group’s Peg

PLAYGO N23 review: Wireless earphones with decent battery, audio output

Image
Wireless earphones are all the rage these days, and PLAY, a Delhi-based start-up is also getting a piece of the action with the launch of its own wireless neckband earphones -- PLAYGO N23 . We used the earphones and here's our view on it. Design PLAYGO N23 has a pretty standard design for wireless earphones with its rubber-esque plastic body and matt finishing. The upper body is elastic and feels durable. The lower end, though, feels a bit suspect, but we had no problems throughout the duration of our review. The earbuds are inclined in relation to the translucent back-case, whise metallic finish gives the earphones a better fit. The back case has magnetic ends that you can use to keep the earphones dangling safely when not in use. The batteries are stored in two wide-bodied capsules with a glossy finish. And then you have your section with options to control volume and a multi-purpose button to receive and reject calls, play and pause music, and other functions. It has

Haryana, Maharashtra election results show local issues, economy matter

Image
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) less than satisfactory performance in the Assembly elections of Haryana and Maharashtra has once again raised questions on its inept handling of the economy, triggering calls for more focus on it, particularly the rural sector. The sector seems to have played a decisive role in several seats in both the states. Its showing has indicated the continuing slowdown in demand, wages, and consumption in rural areas has started affecting politics. In Haryana, the ruling BJP was marginally short of a majority, just months after it won all the 10 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, riding on the Modi wave, while in Maharashtra, the BJP-Shiv Sena saw its seat count go down by 27 from the Assembly elections in 2014. Sources in the ruling party, its ideological fountainhead Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and sister organisations admitted voters had started raising questions on the government’s handling of economic issues, particularly thos

Son rises for the Sena: Aaditya Thackeray wins from Worli Assembly seat

Image
Few parties manage to stay relevant through a generational change. Shiv Sena is the exception. When it was formed, its founder Bal Thackeray saw it as forum to arouse the Maharashtrian-ness of those who lived in the state, making the Mangalorean, the North Indian, the Tamil, Telugu, and the Malayali the ‘other’. The Communists and the Congress were also targets of Marmik, a cartoon magazine Thackeray founded that poked fun at the outsiders and the meek Maharashtrians. It also gave an ideological cover for breaking the Communist-dominated trade unions in and around Mumbai's textile mills. But he soon found that the ‘Maharashtra for Maharashtrians’ slogan had limited appeal outside Mumbai where non-Maharashtrians were seen as performing an economic service and not necessarily as a threat. A change of track followed with Sena supporters becoming the vanguard of the Hindu movement, speeding ahead of the BJP. Later, owing to the efforts of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, an agreeme

Chandrayaan-2 releases colourful pictures of Moon's impact craters

Image
Indian space agency has released fresh set of pictures of impact craters on moon surface taken by its Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday releasing a picture on its Twitter handle said the images were taken by the Dual Frequency-Synthetic Aperture Radar (DF-SAR) on its Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter. According to ISRO, the Moon has been continuously bombarded by meteorites, asteroids and comets since its formation. This has resulted in the formation of innumerable impact craters that form the most distinct geographic features on its surface. Impact craters are approximately circular depressions on the surface of the moon, ranging from small, simple, bowl-shaped depressions to large, complex, multi-ringed impact basins. "In contrast to volcanic craters, which result from explosion or internal collapse, impact craters typically have raised rims and floors that are lower in elevation than the surrounding terrain," ISRO said. NASA orbiter finds no trace of Chandrayaan-2 lander 'Vikram' on moon

Image
NASA has found no evidence of Chandrayaan-2's Vikram lander in the images captured during a latest flyby of its Moon orbiter of the lunar region where India's ambitious mission attempted a soft landing, the US space agency said. On September 7, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) attempted a soft landing of Vikram on the uncharted lunar south pole, before losing communication with the lander. "The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter imaged the area of the targeted Chandrayaan-2 Vikram landing site on October 14 but did not observe any evidence of the lander," Noah Edward Petro, the Project Scientist for the LRO mission, told PTI in an exclusive email interaction. Petro said that the camera team carefully examined the images and employed the change detection technique -- using a ratio of an image from prior to the landing attempt to the one acquired on October 14. This approach, he said, is used for finding new meteorite impacts on the Moon that also hel

G Suite users will now have single profile photo for Google, Gmail

Banking services partially affected due to employee unions' strikes

Image
Banking operations in some parts of the country were affected on Tuesday as two employee-unions are observing a nation-wide strike . Some of the services like cash deposit and withdrawal at the counter and cheque clearances have been impacted due to the strike by banking staff. Public sectors bank branches in urban areas of the country are, however, operational as officers these banks are not part of strike . Most of the banks including SBI had informed their customer about strike call given by All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) to protest against bank mergers and fall in deposit rates. Merger of banks is totally unwarranted in India as we need more banking services and opening of more branches to serve the people, AIBEA General Secretary C H Venkatachalam said. "The merger has so far resulted in closure of branches and hence it is a wrong policy. Recovery of the huge bad loans is the top priority for banks,

Instagram is looking for a way to help users decide who to unfollow

Image
Aiming to make it easier for users to manage the accounts they follow on Instagram , the photo-sharing platform has started testing a feature to group followers into categories, and help them choose users to unfollow, the media reported. However, there was no guarantee that the feature would be ready for mass use in the near future. As spotted by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, users could look at the "least interacted with" people to unfollow a bunch of them en masse, or browse just those accounts posting artwork, Engadget reported on Monday. The feature would essentially help users to focus their feed on those people they care about, but it could also help on those they rather not wade through the regular feed just to find their favourites. Instagram's feed is based on an algorithm where it shows accounts that users interact with the most frequently at the top. Read More Article Source -> Business Standard

Xiaomi plans to launch more than 10 5G phones in 2020: CEO Lei Jun

Image
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp plans to launch more than 10 5G phones in 2020, Chief Executive Officer Lei Jun (pictured) said on Sunday, speaking at the World Internet conference in the eastern Chinese town of Wuzhen. Lei’s remarks come as the company faces intense competition in its home market from rival Huawei Technologies. Last month Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro, the company’s first 5G-enabled phone for the domestic market. According to Lei, demand for the phone exceeded the company’s expectations and led to supply chain issues. The device’s reception has prompted Xiaomi to launch 5G models for the high, middle, and low-end price tiers next year. “ People in the industry fear that next year 4G models won't sell, this is a step you have no choice but to take”Lei said. “So we hope that operators can speed up their expansion of 5G base stations.” Xiaomi’s share price has fallen steadily this past year as China’s smartphone market grows more competitiv
