Krysta Davis was 18 weeks pregnant when she was told that the baby she was carrying had an abnormality. Her to-be-born daughter Rylei Arcadia Diane Lovett was diagnosed with anencephaly, a rare condition in which an infant is missing parts of the brain or skull. Doctors gave 23-year-old Davis and her boyfriend Derek Lovett the news that Rylei would not live for more than 30 minutes after birth. Speaking to People magazine, Krysta said that it was definitely "shocking." Doctors gave Davis two options: induce labour immediately or carry the baby to term and donate the child's organs . "[The doctor] said babies with anencephaly don't tend to survive birth let alone cord-cutting. There was no outcome where she would be able to survive on her own for very long if at all," she said, adding, "We decided that even if we couldn't bring our daughter home, no mother would have to go through what we were going to go through." Looking for maintaining healthy diet? Start your meal with high-calorie desserts

Image
It turns out consuming a high-calorie dessert at the beginning of your meal can actually make you opt for a healthier course. According to a recent study, if you are going to choose dessert first, then the high-calorie option might lead to a healthier meal. As part of the study, researchers placed either a healthy or less healthy dessert (fresh fruit vs. lemon cheesecake) at the beginning or end of a university cafeteria line. When diners picked the cheesecake first, they then chose lower-calorie main or side dishes and ultimately consumed fewer calories than diners who chose the fresh fruit first. "We believe diners who chose the indulgent dessert first then picked healthier main and side dishes to make up for their high-calorie dessert. Diners who picked the healthier dessert may have thought they already had done a good deed for their bodies so they deserved higher-calorie food further down the cafeteria line," said Martin Reimann, lead researcher of the stud

Tattoos linked with mental health issues in individuals

Image
Individuals with tattoos are more likely to be diagnosed with a mental health issue and report sleep problems, a recent study suggests. In a survey-based study published in the International Journal of Dermatology, the researchers also pointed out that people who had tattoos were more likely to be smokers, to have spent time in jail, and to have a higher number of sex partners. The survey was conducted in July of 2016 and resulted in a sample of 2,008 adults residing in the United States. "Previous research has established an association between having a tattoo and engaging in risky behaviours. In an era of the increasing popularity of tattoos, even among women and working professionals, we find these relationships persist but are not associated with lower health status," said Karoline Mortensen, lead author of the study. Sweeteners may not help lose weight

Image
The findings of a recent study suggest that artificial sweeteners may not help with weight loss. The research, published in the journal The BMJ, also stated that there is not enough evidence on their safety.                                         Growing concerns about health and quality of life have encouraged many people to adopt healthier lifestyles and avoid foods rich in sugars, salt, or fat. Foods and drinks containing non-sugar sweeteners rather than regular ("free") sugars have therefore become increasingly popular. Although several non-sugar sweeteners are approved for use, less is known about their potential benefits and harms within acceptable daily intakes because the evidence is often limited and conflicting. To better understand these potential benefits and harms, a team of European researchers analysed 56 studies comparing no intake or lower intake of non-sugar sweeteners with higher intake in healthy adults and children. Cerebral palsy can increase risk of developing depression

Image
The risk of developing depression and anxiety is higher among adults with cerebral palsy as compared to their peers without the condition, according to a study. The findings have appeared in the journal JAMA Neurology. A team of researchers led by Dr Kimberley Smith from the University of Surrey and Dr Jennifer Ryan from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland investigated the mental health of those with cerebral palsy and compared it with peers of a similar age, sex, and socioeconomic status, who were not sufferers. Intellectual difficulties, which can affect many with the condition, were also examined to determine if they have an impact on the development of depression and anxiety. Researchers examined up to 28 years of UK primary care data of 1,700 adults aged 18 or older with cerebral palsy, and 5,115 adults who did not have the condition. Researchers found that the risk of depression was 28 per cent higher and the risk of anxiety was 40 per cent higher

Exercising at this time of the day does not cause sleep problems

Image
Turns out, exercising four hours before going to bed does not have a negative effect on sleep. Even among sleep researchers, it is a widely held belief that sleep quality can be improved by avoiding exercise in the evening. However, according to researchers from the Institute of Human Movement Sciences and Sport, it is not generally true. The scientists concluded that "If doing sport in the evening has any effect on sleep quality at all, it's rather a positive effect, albeit only a mild one." By combining the data from the different studies, the researchers showed that in the night after study participants had done some sport in the evening, they spent 21.2 percent of their sleeping time in deep sleep. Following an evening without exercise, the average figure was 19.9 percent. While the difference is small, it is statistically significant. Deep sleep phases are especially important for physical recovery. However, vigorous training within an hour befor

Know how massage helps ease arthritis pain

Image
Turns out, undergoing a weekly, whole-body massage can help patients with arthritis (in their knees) experience significant improvement in pain and mobility. Researchers at the Duke University suggested that massage can offer a safe and effective complement to the management of knee osteoarthritis, at least in the short term. The finding of the study appeared in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. " Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability and affects more than 30 million people in America," said lead author Adam Perlman. "Medications are available, but many patients experience adverse side effects, raising the need for alternatives. This study demonstrates that massage has the potential to be one such option." Scientists enrolled 200 patients with osteoarthritis in their knees. Patients were randomly divided into three groups: those who received a one-hour, weekly Swedish massage for eight weeks; those who received a light-touch

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health tracked 101 hog farm workers and 79 household members for four months, taking nasal swabs and asking questions about face mask use. The findings of the study are published in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives. The researchers found that for workers who wore face masks consistently during the four-month study, witnessed a 50 to 70 percent reduction in the likelihood of finding dangerous, livestock-derived S. aureus strains in their swabs and household members appeared to be protected too. "Face masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) could be effective in reducing occupational exposure to livestock-associated S. aureus and preventing the spread of these bacteria to workers and their families," said study's lead author Christopher D. Fixed bedtime, sufficient sleep may lead to healthier teens

Image
According to a recent study, having a fixed bedtime and getting sufficient amount of sleep from early childhood may lead to a healthy body weight in adolescence. The results of the study were published in the journal 'Sleep'. The researchers at Penn State identified groups of children by bedtime and sleep routines and tested longitudinal associations for each group with adolescent body mass index (BMI). The findings suggest that childhood bedtime and sleep routine groups predict adolescent sleep patterns and BMI. In a national study of urban households, one-third of children consistently adhered to age-appropriate bedtimes for ages five through nine. Those who had no bedtime routine at age of nine had shorter self-reported sleep duration and higher BMI at age of 15 when compared to those children with age-appropriate bedtimes (after adjusting for age 3 BMI). "Parenting practices in childhood affect physical health and BMI in the teenage years. Developing a
