Slowdown hits sales of cars, biscuits in 2019, but not smartphones

Image
The economic slowdown may have clipped sales of cars and biscuits in 2019, but smartphones bucked the trend as urban and rural users continued to buy, and even upgrade to, expensive handsets - a trend likely to pick up pace in the coming year. The growth in smartphone adoption was further fuelled by the government's push to position the country as a global hub for manufacturing and coax Apple and other leading brands to produce and export more phones from India. Experts say that phone shipment is expected to see high single-digit to double-digit growth in India as smartphones aiding everything from shopping to banking to social media and, yes, perfect selfies! Counterpoint Research Associate Director Tarun Pathak expects India's smartphone market to grow by 9 per cent this year, and in double digits (by 12-14 per cent) in 2020. By 2022, over 700 million people are expected to have a smartphone in India, and over a billion devices will be sold over the next four-f

Realme power bank review: Easily the most beautiful performer in the segment

Image
Chinese technology company Realme is fast shedding its smartphone-only tag to venture into other products like earphones and power bank. We reviewed a 10,000 mAh power bank launched by the company recently and found it to be really handy, especially with a smartphone whose battery would completely drain at least twice a day. Realme power bank review What’s more, we were able to use this two-way fast-charging power bank to charge not only phones but also headphones and other power banks. In terms of design, the Realme power bank has a minimal look, and it is sleek. Unlike most power banks of similar capacity, this one is not bulky or heavy and fits easily in your pocket. We used to review a red-colored unit whose matte finish looked attractive; you might easily mistake it for a new smartphone. The top edge has a USB-C input port, the output USB port, four LED indicators, and the power button. Read More

Infinix Hot 8 review: Not a great multi-tasker, scores on everything else

Image
In a market where budget smartphones (priced below Rs 10,000) are available in plenty, Infinix has come up with yet another model in this category. Infinix Hot 8 will be available for purchase from September 10. The new phone is priced at Rs 6,999. Powered by Android 9 with 4 GB RAM, the phone has a 5000 mAh battery. So let's find out how this phone turns out: Design and Display The Infinix Hot 8 has a striking resemblance compared with most other budget smartphones. The company has given it a sleek look and the round edges add to the feel of the device. The gradient colour of the phone is clearly done to notch up the design game. There are a few colour options — Quetzal Cyan, Cosmic Purple, Shark Grey and Midnight Black. The good thing is that the phone doesn't slip from hands and is not as heavy as its size would suggest. The volume buttons and screen lock button on the right side on the phone are just fine. The SIM & memory card slot is on the left, with space f

Huawei overtakes Apple, becomes 2nd biggest smartphone maker in the world

Image
Huawei Technologies Co. overtook Apple Inc. to claim the No. 2 spot in smartphones in the first quarter, moving a step closer to its avowed ambition of displacing Samsung at the top of the market. The networking giant, shrugging off a barrage of accusations that it aids Chinese espionage (which it’s repeatedly denied), grew shipments 50 percent from a year earlier, research firm IDC estimates. It was the only name in the top 4 that managed to expand volumes as the overall market slid for the sixth consecutive quarter. Huawei’s been steadily gaining on Apple and Samsung Electronics Co with an increasingly high-end line-up of devices, particularly in its home market of China. The iPhone maker this week projected quarterly sales that topped analysts’ estimates, suggesting demand for iPhones has stabilized after a disappointing holiday period. Samsung also enjoyed a spike compared with the fourth quarter thanks to the launch of the marquee S10 range in February. IDC reckons Huawe

Samsung is retrieving all Galaxy Fold samples distributed to reviewers

Image
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is retrieving all Galaxy Fold samples distributed to reviewers to investigate reports of broken screens, a day after it postponed the phone's launch, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday. The retrieval comes as the world's biggest smartphone maker met with embarrassment ahead of the foldable device's U.S. release on April 26, with a handful of technology journalists reporting breaks, bulges and blinking screens after a day's use. The South Korean tech giant postponed the handset's launch for an unspecified period of time while it investigated the matter. It said initial findings showed the issues could be associated with impact on exposed areas of the hinges. A representative declined to comment further on Tuesday. Samsung's share price was 0.4 percent lower as of 0425 GMT, in a flat Seoul market. However, parts suppliers fell, with hinge maker KH Vatec Co Ltd shedding 3.1 percent. A person with

Huawei P30 Pro first impression: 5x optical zoom is it's best feature

Image
Huawei P30 Pro , the upcoming flagship smartphone by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei, is set to arrive in India soon. Being a P-series smartphone, known for imaging capabilities, the P30 Pro boasts a quad-camera set-up on the back, featuring the company’s first periscope telephoto lens capable of up to 5x optical zoom. The phone's first impressions are in favour of it being more than just a camera phone. Like its predecessor, the Huawei P20 Pro (review), the phone’s gradient reflective design on the back is mesmerising. The new colour options, especially ‘breathing crystal’ white, look elegant – giving the phone a distinct identity. The phone’s curved OLED screen on the front is reminiscent of the Mate 20 Pro, but without a huge notch on the top. The tiny waterdrop notch, curved screen, and in-display fingerprint sensor bring the phone closer to being a bezel-less screen smartphone. Unlike the P20 Pro, the phone’s front looks uniform and has no design obstructions

Digitek DS-005 gimbal: A slow yet sturdy stabiliser for mobile videos

Image
The quintessential mobile phone has developed by leaps and bound and is now considered a serious option in filming professional videos, though image stability has been a major issue, with jerks and shakes ruining important moments. While optical image stabilisation available in premium smartphones solves this problem to some extent, silky smooth stabilisation remains a distant goal. Which means an external aid is a must if you are into serious filmmaking with your smartphone. While 3-axis gimbals are common attachments for professional cameras, a few options are also available for mobiles and DJI's products have been setting benchmarks for sometime now. Digitek, a brand known for its reliable camera accessories, also has a product for the same and is a budget alternative to DJI Osmo Mobile 2. The Digitek DS-005 gimbal is sturdy and well-built with no creaky parts. Although heavy, it is surprisingly comfortable to hold and I have recorded a 30-minute long footage without

OnePlus shows Apple how to become the India's top smartphone seller

Image
OnePlus commanded 40 per cent of India's premium smartphone market in June, compared with zero when it arrived in 2014 Companies News : India is arguably the world’s toughest smartphone market — just ask Apple. Yet Chinese manufacturer OnePlus has found a path to success in the country of 1.3 billion. As Pete Lau, OnePlus’s co-founder and chief executive officer, describes it, OnePlus targeted younger users with stylish and affordable Android-based phones. Rather than plastering shops with ads, student ambassadors promote the Shenzhen-based company’s products. OnePlus also sponsors cricket games, breaking a no-advertising pledge it has in other places. Thanks to those efforts, OnePlus commanded 40 per cent of India’s premium smartphone market in June, compared with zero when it arrived in 2014, according to Counterpoint Research, which defines the segment as one where devices cost Rs 30,000 ($435) or more. OnePlus is ahead of Samsung Electronics Co., which has a 3
