Qualcomm leans into cameras, gaming with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform

Qualcomm Inc on Tuesday released its new top-tier smartphone chip aimed at premium-priced Android phones with features like sharper photos and graphics than handsets using chips from rivals. The San Diego, California-based company is the biggest supplier of the chips at the heart of many Android phones, competing against rivals such as Taiwan's MediaTek Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, which uses Qualcomm chips in some of its phones but self-supplies chips for some models. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip released Tuesday will have similar computing cores to rivals like MediaTek, which this month announced a chip aimed at premium phones. But almost every other part of the chip are custom designed by Qualcomm, including those playing a role in the visual quality of photos and graphics-intensive apps like games. Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager of mobile, compute and infrastructure for Qualcomm, said the company has been crafting software that will l

Huawei asks US court to overturn FCC ban as national security threat

Image
Chinese conglomerate Huawei has reached a court in the US, demanding it to overturn the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) decision to designate the company as a national security threat. In 2019, the FCC voted to prevent US companies from doing business with Huawei and ZTE on national security concerns. The FCC finalised the ban in December 2020, supported by former President Donald Trump. "The order on review potentially impacts the financial interests of the telecommunications industry as a whole," Huawei said in its court filing, reports The Verge. An FCC spokesperson said: "Last year, the FCC issued a final designation identifying Huawei as a national security threat based on a substantial body of evidence developed by the FCC and numerous US national security agencies. We will continue to defend that decision". Read More

Huawei to pack less of a punch this year after bruising 2020: Analysts

Image
By David Kirton SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) - Huawei Technologies Co Ltd this year will likely see slower 5G business and push further into software, while hoping its smartphones get a reprieve from U.S. sanctions which last year struck the chip-reliant heart of its group, analysts said. Limited access to high-end semiconductors means rationing during China's network upgrade, they said, while the dissection of its mobile arm will send Huawei tumbling down rankings while it continues to develop a proprietary operating system. China's leading telecommunications equipment maker found itself on a U.S. trade blacklist in May 2019 due to national security concerns. Huawei has repeatedly denied it is a risk. That effectively banned U.S.-based firms from selling Huawei essential U.S. technology. Last August, the ban was extended to foreign firms with U.S. business, reaching chief suppliers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC). Read More

The assets to be sold have yet to be finalised but could include Honor's brand, research & development capabilities and related supply chain management business, two of the people said. Honor MagicBook 15 review: A basic notebook good only for basic chores

Image
Chinese electronics maker Huawei’s digital brand Honor has, since late last year, been planning to expand its hardware lines beyond smartphones. After a silent period of over six months, the brand launched its first notebook, the Honor MagicBook 15 , in the country in August. It is a thin and light notebook that brings some premium features at an affordable price tag of Rs 42,990. In principle, the Honor MagicBook 15 seems to be a decent notebook for everyday use. But does it justify its pricing? Let’s find out: Design Made of aluminium, the MagicBook 15 has a thin and lightweight build. It might not be the most compact notebook around, but it certainly has a zing to its design which adds to the product’s overall premium character. But there are some issues: Even if the design is good and the build sturdy, the weight distribution is quite uneven. And, its hinge is unable to keep the display lid intact; it keeps swaying backwards even on slight movements. Read More

Huawei AppGallery replaces Google Play Store on Honor 9X Pro: FAQs answered

Image
Chinese smartphone maker Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has announced the launch of Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), which will ship with the company’s upcoming Honor 9X Pro smartphone. Honor Sport Pro review: Quality budget earphones for your workout sessions

Image
As phone manufacturers gradually do away with headphone jacks, wireless earphones have become the new normal. Chinese electronics giant Honor's Sport Pro headphones follow the same trend, albeit with a special focus on fitness enthusiasts. Priced at Rs 3,999, it is available in Phantom Red, Phantom Grey, and Phantom Purple colour options. Design One of the first things you notice about the Sport Pro is that its ear tips resemble Apple Earpods. The silicone ear tips are uniquely shaped which means you need to twist them slightly in ear after putting them on. But once that is done, it's a snug fit. They also feel really soft and easy on the ear, mainly because they need not be inserted too deep. Read More

Honor 9X review: Above average phone with excellent design, long battery

Image
It's so much easier to pick a flagship phone. Most of them have discernible characteristics and one is not easily mistaken for the other. In contrast, the sub-Rs 20,000 category of smartphones is a muddled marketplace. Major players such as Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei and BBK Electronics (Oppo, Vivo and Realme) have flooded the market beyond recognition. You get more to choose from, but it is also considerably harder to zero in on that one phone. And there isn't that one phone anymore unless you know what you want from it exactly. The Honor 9X makes that choice a bit easier. It's one of the few phones in the price range that come with a large, uninterrupted, almost borderless screen with a pop-up selfie camera. Other notable mentions include the Vivo V15 (Rs 16,440, Amazon), the Realme X (Rs 16,900, Amazon) and also the very similar Huawei Y9 Prime (Rs 15,990, Amazon), all of them released last year. Here's how the new model from Honor released in January 2020 fares

Year in Review: Why 5G remained a distant dream for India in 2019 too

Image
5G is expected to bring some key improvements to the current generation of mobile networks with regard to data transfer speed, latency and throughput. Besides, the next-generation mobile network is also expected to enable the full potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, bringing to reality the concept of connected homes, office spaces, vehicles, and more. Considering the benefits of 5G , at least in terms of what it promises on paper, and given India's growing demand for data services, it is safe to assume that the technology would help put the country's dream of a digital economy on the fast track. However, despite several developments on the 5G front, the next-generation network does not appear to be anywhere close to getting rolled out in the country. What is 5G ? 5G is a mobile network touted to offer faster data transfer speeds than the current generation (4G) at a lower latency rate and higher throughput to handle more active connections simulta

Image
Smartphone design trends 2019 : Once a game of specifications, the smartphone market came a long way this year.
