Apple iPhone 13 review: Certainly more than just another iteration

Image
The certainty and uncertainty abounding Apple’s September launches are constant. Nearly everyone knows that the new phone would look and feel like the older one — as they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it — still, there’s always the expectation that Apple might throw a surprise with a feature or two. This year’s Apple iPhone 13 launch has been no different. Apple was consistent with its design and presentation style, promising 20 per cent more something and 30 per cent higher another thing. Consumers demand a new model every year, and if a company were innovative every year, it would also be forever out of the market. Design A common feature of Apple’s announcements is that the new iPhone is the fastest, newest and “more adjectives” ever. While that is indeed true, one of the things that can be surely attested to is that the new iPhone 13 is certainly the prettiest ever. While it looks much like the Apple iPhone 12, the colour selection this year is much better. Pink, the mod

Foxconn iPhone India output drops 50% as workers contract Covid-19

Image
Production of the Apple iPhone 12 at a Foxconn factory in India has slumped by more than 50% because workers infected with COVID-19 have had to leave their posts, two sources told Reuters. The Foxconn facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu produces iPhones specifically for India, the world's No.2 smartphone market. Tamil Nadu is one of the worst hit states in the second coronavirus wave engulfing India. Officials imposed a full lockdown in the state from Monday, closing public transport and shuttering shops, to try slow surging infections. More than 100 Foxconn employees in the state have tested positive for COVID-19 and the company has enforced a no-entry ban at its factory in the capital of Chennai until late May, one of the sources said. "Employees are only allowed to leave but not to enter the facility since yesterday," the person said. "Only a small part of output is being kept." Read More

iPhone 13 models will be slightly thicker with large camera bumps: Report

Image
The upcoming Apple iPhone 13 models will be slightly thicker than the iPhone 12 models and will also feature larger, thicker camera bumps with lenses that protrude less. The new aCEiPhone 13aCE and 13 Pro models are expected to feature a thickness of 7.57mm, up from 7.4mm in the aCEiPhone 12aCE models, MacRumors reported. The aCEiPhone 12aCE and 12 Pro feature camera bumps in the range of 1.5mm to 1.7mm, while the aCEiPhone 13aCE will have a thicker 2.51mm camera bump. The a IPhone 13aCE Pro, meanwhile, will feature a 3.65mm thick camera bump. The camera bumps are getting thicker in part to prevent the lenses from protruding quite as much on the aCEiPhone 13aCE models, the report said. Rather than the individual lenses protruding as we saw on the aCEiPhone 12aCE models, the camera bump itself on the aCEiPhone 13aCE family will protrude more while the lenses will sit closer to a flush position, similar to the design of the 2020 iPad Pro. Patent reveals Apple working on iPhone display with variable refresh rates

Image
A new Apple patent released by the US Patent and Trademark Office has revealed that the company is working on an iPhone display that can update the content at up to 240Hz which is four times the native refresh rate. With the upcoming display, an ?iPhone? with a 60Hz display would be able to increase its variable refresh rate to 120Hz, 180Hz, or 240Hz automatically, reports Patently Apple.   This technology exists on the iPad Pro lineup, but only switches from 60Hz to 120Hz, depending on the content shown. Currently, all iPhones have a refresh rate of 60Hz," the report said on Tuesday. The patent also said that the technology can be extended to other devices such as the iPad and Apple Watch in the future. Read More

iPhone 13 production not to face iPhone 12-like delays: Report

Famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that the next generation iPhone 13 mass production will be as per schedule, without any delay like this year. According to him, if the iPhone 13 production starts in summer next year, then Apple will launch the next-generation iPhones in September, following its usual release time frame. Apple usually begins mass production of iPhones in early summer, but iPhone 12 models got delayed due to Covid-19 related lockdown and travel restrictions, hindering the production process. Kuo denied the concerns regarding Apple supplier TSMC's capacity utilisation being dropped to 80 per cent from 100 per cent for the A14 chips in the first quarter of 2021, reports MacRumors. The analyst noted that this is more of a seasonality factor rather than a capacity utilisation aspect. Read More

Microsoft to release update allowing iPhone users to play Xbox games soon

Image
Microsoft is about to release a new update to the Xbox App on iOS which will let the users stream and play Xbox One games on the iPhone. According to Mashable, this obviously isn't the same as cloud gaming and is something that's only probably useful to owners of Xbox One consoles. The new feature which includes remote play will let the user stream Xbox games directly from his/her own console over WiFi or mobile internet. To make use of this, users will have to log in to their Xbox accounts and make sure the console's got access to power. While making use of remote play, the console won't start with a sound or show that it's powered on with the light at the front. The new iOS update isn't available for all users yet though as Microsoft is only testing it with TestFlight members. But since the Android-counterpart of the application has been rolled out already, the application should soon be publicly available on iOS too. Read More

Apple Inc delays debut of anti-tracking tool in iPhone software

Image
Apple is delaying a new privacy feature in the next version of its iPhone operating system that will make it more difficult for app makers to track people online to help sell digital ads. The decision outlined on Thursday affects iOS 14 , which is expected to be released as a free software upgrade to roughly a billion iPhone users later this month. Apple intended iOS 14 to automatically block tracking as soon as it came out, but the company now says it will hold back the tool until early next year. The same safeguard was supposed be in the next operating systems for iPads and Apple TVs, too. The feature would require apps to explicitly ask users to permission to collect and share data about their online behavior through a unique code that identifies every iPhone.
