Huawei delays global launch of foldable 5G Mate X by 3 months

Huawei will delay the launch of its much-touted foldable 5G Mate X smartphone by three months, the latest setback for the company that was slapped with US sanctions last month. The Mate X, a competitor to Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Fold, is expected to be rolled out globally in September, Vincent Pang, Huawei's head of corporate communications, said on the sidelines of the WSJ Tech D.Live conference in Hong Kong. It was originally slated for a June launch. The delay comes as Huawei phones face being cut off from updates of Google's Android operating system (OS) in the wake of the US blacklist that bans American companies from doing business with the Chinese firm. Pang, however, denied the delay was due to the ban, saying Huawei was in the process of running certification tests with various carriers that were expected to be completed in August. South Korean electronics giant Samsung in February showcased its new category of foldable devices with the announcement of the Galaxy Fold . Though the smartphone-cum-tablet looks futuristic, it has a lot of mechanically moving parts, making one wonder if it can match the longevity factor of the current-generation bar-shaped smartphones. Since the time the phone was announced, only a few people had been able to get hands-on experience of the product. Therefore, it was difficult to know if the phone was durable. However, the new video uploaded by the company shows behind-the-scenes action where the Galaxy Fold is put through stress test. The test simulates screen fold and unfold mechanisms multiple times, or at least 200,000 times – according to the company’s claim. Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei on February 24 introduced a foldable mobile device called the Huawei Mate X at the Mobile World Congress 2019. The device was introduced soon after South Korean electronics major Samsung showcased its foldable mobile device, the Galaxy Fold. Though other smartphone makers are also expected to foray in to this new category of foldable device, it makes one wonder if this is going to be the next big thing in the smartphone domain? Let’s find out: What are foldable mobile devices There is a long history of clamshell form factor devices. For example the Moto Razr phone was once a fad but the new form of foldable devices are nothing like previous generation phones. Unlike the conventional clamshell design where the screen is on one side and most of the hardware on another, the new category of mobile devices have a foldable screen, giving them a distinct identity.
